The Clinical Phlebotomist performs venipunctures competently and expediently by identifying the best method of retrieving specimens, collecting drug screens, performing audiograms and routine/ STAT Electrocardiogram (EKG), and preparing specimens for laboratory testing, has thorough knowledge of test requirements and test being performed and assist in Clinical Laboratory as needed. Provides patient care/services for all stages of life span including pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
Essential Functions:
- Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
- Identifies the patient information before venipuncture is performed.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory.
- Labels and records all test tubes, logs procedures, files paperwork according to filing system set forth by lab supervisor.
- Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, Co-workers, nursing, and medical staff.
- Knowledgeable about color of draw, which tube to use and the volume of blood needed.
- Knowledgeable of testing requirements and where to find that information.
- Maintains work area including but not limited to moping, sweeping, whipping down machines and all work areas.
- Assists laboratory technician, does clerical work when needed.
- Always maintains patient confidentiality and understands Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPPA).
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
Required Qualifications:
- Phlebotomy certification.
- Experience preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements:
- Routinely able to lift twenty (20) pounds.
- Walk and stand majority of the day.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Possess a strong eye for detail.
- Comfortable with computers, word, excel.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
