RN Supervisor


General Summary: The Registered Nurse renders highly professional and technical nursing care to assigned patients. Provides direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process. Directs and supervises other assigned team members and collaborates with physicians and multi-disciplinary team members to achieve the highest standards of care specific to the age of the patient. Provides patient care/services for all stages of the lifespan including pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

Essential Functions:

  • Practices in accordance with nursing home/hospital philosophy; Nursing Department’s philosophy, goals, and standards of care; State Board of Nursing; State Nursing Practice Act and other regulatory agencies.
  • Promotes efficient and positive interdepartmental relationships.
  • Ensures a secure and safe patient environment by practicing in accordance with organization and unit specific, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Reviews the need for and recommends changes in the standards of staffing according to results of staffing, census, and acuity of nursing units to see that staffing is consistent with patient needs and budgetary control.
  • Participates in cost containment activities.
  • Maintains job-specific competency which addresses effective, safe use of equipment, infection control, disaster training, emergency life-saving procedures cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and patient information management.
  • Maintains a high standard of patient care and personnel performance by being aware of the indications pointed out by the by the Quality Assurance program and gives those problems special attention.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills through problem solving abilities and adherence to standards of care.
  • Controls staff by taking appropriate and corrective actions, using direct observation of staff and immediate correction and counseling staff.
  • Individualizes the nursing plan of care in collaboration with the patient/significant other and alternative members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Completes treatments, medication administration, intravenous (IV) therapy, and equipment use following established standards.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills to treat patients/others with dignity and respect.
  • Assumes accountability and responsibility for quality of patient care provided.
  • Fosters peer support and team building through active leadership.
  • Documents assessments, patients need, interventions for improving/maintaining patient/family condition to address needs, responses to interventions, teaching provided, and patient status on designated forms.
  • Completes self-evaluation and continuing education on record in an ongoing manner annually. Participates in disaster preparedness training.
  • Attends meetings as required, participating in in-services, continuing education, and presenting educational experiences as an in-service to other staff.
  • Investigate patient complaints immediately and reports to DON immediately for incidents reportable to state.
  • Assist DON in gathering information and starting time line to send to the state.
  • Completes Minimum Data Sets for residents accurately and with in the state and federal regulation guidelines.
  • Be able to take call as necessary.
  • Reports to the Director of Nursing, Administrator, or Social Services of complaints of missing
  • Promote and deliver the proper teamwork between the shifts and departments, providing for coordinated patient care.
  • Guide staff members individually on professional matters.
  • Promotes excellent public relations with patients, visitors, and the community regarding your job and the facility.
  • Assist staff in providing for complete and useful care plans.
  • Provides the use of the nursing process in resolving patient care problems.
  • Obtains medications, and /or supplies needed from other departments to maintain safe, efficient, and therapeutic care to patients on a continuing basis.
  • Obtain previous medical records as needed.
  • Ensure calls are made with regard to an expiration and support staff and families; includes calls to attending and consulting physicians, county coroner, funeral services, and family or friend of family as requested.
  • Assumes other responsibilities and duties that relate to nursing administration as required and/or responsibilities or duties of a floor nurse as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • No experienced required for beginning practitioner.
  • Refresher course required for nurses who have not worked in an acute setting for five years or more.
  • Current Licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state.
  • CPR Certification required or must be obtained within probationary period.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred for charge nurse role.

Physical Qualifications:

  • Walking and standing throughout shift.
  • Lifting patients with assistance daily.
  • Potential exposure to contamination with blood or bodily fluids, requiring wearing protective equipment.
  • May be required to work unusual or additional shift hours.
  • Works in a continually changing work environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, and listening skills).
  • Ability to provide direct and indirect patient care.
